Signing in...

Journalism in South Africa has grown over the last few years and in fact regarding careers today, journalism has offered a range of options. We now look at how online has turned from the devil to the most adored angel. I learnt quite a lot whilst browsing the different news sites, the structure, the different sections as they would have in print and history of all the sites featured in my report.
They are working around the old and new technology, to bring us news online and journalists also look at the broad spectrum as to how they ought to conduct their articles, photographs and more. I chose The Citizen, News24 and Mail&Guardian to research.
Firstly, The Citizen is a tabloid newspaper that appeals to the social broads of Gauteng, circulating daily. Going through their website, http://www.citizen.co.za/citizen/content/en/citizen/home it showed news of which they thought to be of public interest. With that in mind the story that reeled me was in fact about Oscar Pistorius’ case. The fact that they allow the public to comment or suggest is also a good thing, it is more of like interacting with the target market.
Second is News24 with the slogan, “Breaking News First” and does in fact do just that in the most innovative form. They have taken the initiative to “break news first” using the most infectious social networks of all and since I am a twitter fanatic, it is quite convenient that they have a twitter handle. http://www.news24.com/  There is also an option to watch videos of current affairs, in and around the world.
Last is Mail&Guardian and before it only appealed to the upper and working class, but with the internet that has changed. It has given everyone a chance to get the news without having to dig into their pockets. http://mg.co.za/page/about-us/  Though revenue is not quite as much regarding, Mail&Guardian has the internet gaining them much more momentum.
In each one the different sections were there to choose from. The structures were different as each news site has a specific clientele they would like to appease. The use of social networks is also a great initiative to get the youth to read more about what is affecting and infecting them as, besides disease. In my view with this assignment I do feel that journalism is in fact growing rather than dying.
